The Institute for Systematics and Population Biology / Zoological Museum at the University of Amsterdam studies the structure of biological diversity by analyzing the processes of evolution and the resulting phylogenetic and biogeographic patterns. Areas of interest for terrestrial taxa are in Europe, South-East Asia and Latin America; for marine taxa in both pelagic and benthic areas. All projects are coordinated at a national level in the Netherlands Research School of Biodiversity, mostly as a part of larger international programmes. The research professors of the institute are Prof.dr S.B. J. Menken, Prof. dr. M.W. Sabelis, and prof.dr. F.R. Schram. The Institute is coordinator of the Erasmus Programme in Systematic Biology, an educational network of 26 systematic institutes in Europe. The network manages advanced courses, specialised seminars, ad exchange programmes. One of the senior scientists at the institute. Ms. dr. S.A. Ulenberg, is president of EuroLOOP /BioNET-International, an organisation dedicated to promote the transfer of collection-based expertise in Europe to developing countries. These activities will benefit very much from this BioCISE/RD project.

The Institute houses the Expert center for Taxonomic Identification (ETI), an UNESCO related organisation that coordinates international networks of taxonomic specialists, together working on multimedia taxonomic (species) databases with associated tools, such as computerised identification keys and geographic analytical systems.
