The Botanical Garden and Botanical Museum Berlin-Dahlem is a semi-autonomous central research unit at the Free University of Berlin. It can draw on the results of more than a decade of discussions of EDP-implementations. In European taxonomic research, the BGBM traditionally plays an important role. It houses extensive collections, participates in floristic projects at an international level (e.g. Med Checklist, Flora Hellenica, Flora Iberica), and plays a leading role in plant taxonomy (secretariat of the International Association for Plant Taxonomy, IAPT, presidency of the Organisation for the Phyto-Taxonomic Investigation of the Mediterranean Area, OPTIMA). Among the approximately 2600 herbaria of the world, the BGBM ranks 18th for number of specimens (about 3 million). The botanical garden is the largest in Germany, currently 32 000 accessions of about 20 750 species from all over the world are present in the living collection. The library of the BGBM is considered one of the most important sources of organism taxonomic information in Europe. The research staff of the BGBM is actively engaged in taxonomic investigations and in several international floristic projects.

The BGBM has been among the first members of international bodies concerned with the standardisation of organism information, such as TDWG (Taxonomic Databases Working Group) and IOPI (International Organisation for Plant Information).
