International Code of Botanical Nomenclature

(Saint Louis Code), Electronic version

CHAPTER I. TAXA AND THEIR RANKS

Article 1

1.1. Taxonomic groups of any rank will, in this Code, be referred to as taxa (singular: taxon).

1.2. Fossil taxa may be treated as morphotaxa. A morphotaxon is defined as a fossil taxon which, for nomenclatural purposes, comprises only the parts, life-history stages, or preservational states represented by the corresponding nomenclatural type.

1.3. As in the case of form-taxa for asexual forms (anamorphs) of certain pleomorphic fungi (Art. 59), the provisions of this Code authorize the publication and use of names of morphotaxa (Art. 11.7).
