The genus Pseudocyphellaria comprises large, foliose lichens, with pseudocyphellae mostly on the underside. P. aurata has green algae, a yellow medula, yellow pseudocyphellae, and soralia. It occurs on humid sites in the mountains.
The genus is much less diverse in the neotropics than in the temperate forests of Chile and Argentina. The commonest species, P. aurata and P. crocata, are "weedy" species with an almost world-wide distribution, very different from most species in the temperate south, which are endemic.
