[Poster presentation / Online demonstration]
The WWW database (http://mansfeld.ipk-gatersleben.de/mansfeld/) is being established on the basis of the first English edition of "Mansfeld's World Manual of Agricultural and Horticultural Crops" (P. Hanelt, editor), which has been prepared by twenty authors. The book will be published by Springer Verlag early in 2001. The database, like the book, contains information on the taxonomy and nomenclature of crop species, their common names, distribution (both as wild and cultivated plants), uses, wild relatives, cultivation history and domestication. More than 6,000 species of cultivated plants, including Algae, Fungi, Pteridophyta, Gymnosperms and Angiosperms, with numerous infraspecific taxa are included. The database is being developed by N. Biermann and J. Ochsmann in the framework of the "Federal Information System Genetic Resources" (BIG, http://www.big-flora.de/), a project funded by the German Federal Ministry of Research (BMBF). Further project partners besides IPK are the German Centre for Documentation and Information in Agriculture (ZADI), the Ruhr-University in Bochum (RUB), and the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN). The IPK partial project is coordinated by H. Knüpffer and K. Bachmann.
