Digitising the collection of the National Herbarium Netherlands: 4 years and 250,000 records later..

The National Herbarium Netherlands (L, U and WAG) embarked on digitising its collection in 1996. Brahms, a FoxPro application developed at the Department of plant Sciences, Oxford is being used for data entry. At present more than 250,000 collections have been databased among which are all type specimens which also have been digitally photographed. Part of the data are available via Internet and on CD-ROM. The presentation will highlight a number of issues that had to be dealt with (choosing an application; validation of data) and the experience gained concerning technical details (procedures, time, personnel costs, storage).
