Instructions for searching the IDB Subject Category List |
You can search the list with HTGREP,
using single word or many words. If you choose to search
for more than one word, then you must use either aboolean
keyword expression or a Perl
regular expression as a search pattern. HTGREP
searches a modified version of the page with all links,
looking for the search string from the text and the url
addresses. HTGREP displays the paragraphs matching the
query as a new WWW page. At the top of that page there is
also a form to enter a new search string. By default, all searches are performed in a case insensitive manner, for example, results for Finland, FINLAND, finland, FiNlAnD ... will be identical. If necessary, it is possible to configure htgrep to understand case sensitive queries. Simple Searches: Enter a single word to find any search record that contains the exact whole word entered. To find parts of words, use an asterisk (*) to represent missing parts of the word.
Boolean Searches: For more control over the search query, you can use a boolean expression using operators such as AND, OR, NOT or brackets ().
Perl Regular Expressions: If you want to use a a Perl regular expression rather than a simple or boolean search, make sure you use a \char contruct (eg \w or \s). Any search query which contains a backslash will be treated as a perl regular expression. If you are using Internet Explorer 4.0 you may have to re-enter the query string. |
Instructions for searching the IDB Alphabetical List |
Your search string can be separated by a single "and" or "or." For example, Soybean and Protein will return all Web Pages containing both Soybean and Protein, Soybean or Protein will return all Web Pages containing either soybean or protein, and Soybean Protein will return only Web Pages containing soybean protein next to each other. Your search word can also be incomplete, e.g. bot will return all entries including bot, such as botanical, botany, pseudobotany, and so on. At present, case is insensitive and "*" is not used. To search for a list of pages in a country, use part of the host name. For example, to get a list of server/pages in France, you can just enter: .fr |
